In no particular order:

Triangle (2009) – Great time loop thriller I hadn’t heard of until recently. Not sure I fully understood everything, but was fascinating to watch nonetheless. RECOMMEND!

The Grudge (2020) – pretty ho-hum horror, especially for a film in the franchise of one of the creepiest ghost films ever – both the first Ju-On: the Curse (2000), and Ju-On: The Grudge (2002) from Japan were incredibly scary to me. I admit I’ve only seen a sampling of the many sequels in this franchise, but this one, produced by Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert no less(!), was just not that great. Passable, but didn’t pass the ultimate test – was I scared? No.

Flesh-Eating Mothers – Pretty epic, if you like this sort of thing. More of a “C” movie than a B movie, with some ridiculous dialogue and decisions made – the kind where you might laugh out loud, I did – but the actual monstrous mothers looked pretty creepy for a low budget 80s horror flick. Recommend IF you like this sort of thing.

Puppet Master: the Littlest Reich – not terrible, some great kills. Beyond the first Puppet Master, I’ve never been a massive fan of this series, but this was watchable, at least. Possibly the best one since the first film, in fact.

Doctor Sleep – I’m not a big fan of Stephen King (he is rarely scary, which is LITERALLY the one required feature of the horror genre….and he basically fails at this constantly), but this was at least an interesting story, with some cool characters. It could have been an hour shorter (literally an hour, it was 2.5 hours, and barely warranted 90 min.).

Suspiria (2018) – The original Dario Argento film (and Inferno, its sequel) are two of my all time favorite horror films, so when I first saw this in 2018, I crossed my fingers it was more like the 2004 Dawn of the Dead (good), and less 2016 Ghostbusters. And it was. Obviously it cannot replace the original, but I take it as an homage more than a remake, and on that level it is an incredibly good modern horror film, filled with tension and creepiness. Plus the magic is great, and the ending is fantastic. So I rewatched it recently.

Mayhem (2017) – Fun thriller of the “Belko Experiment” genre, if you will. Not bad. Not amazing.

Satanic Panic – Great fun! I love films like this – supernatural, thriller, good story, horror, gore, touches of humor, demonic magic, evil cultists, what’s not to like?

Tragedy Girls – Great fun! Clever writing, funny, dark, gory, almost nothing in this not to like.

Captivity – an okay “torture porn” genre film. Apparently came out around the years of Hostel and Saw, but was not as well known. I just heard about it and saw it for the first time. There’s a reason it’s not as well known as Hostel, and especially Saw (which, for all its praise, I STILL think Saw is an “underrated” franchise, and can barely say enough good things about it).

Midway – Okay, not a horror film, of the horror genre, but war is horror, so I say fair game. Incredible film – and as far as movies go, is actually pretty realistic and true, going so far as to take lots of cues from the amazing “Shattered Sword” book about the battle, which I read a few years ago.

I See You (2019) – Decent thriller. Has all the elements I love, and yet I didn’t love the film. But it was certainly worth a watch.

Rabid (2019) – Let me say first off, that although I super love Cronenberg, his “Rabid” is not that great of a film. But he has done plenty of other films to make up for it (his 1986 The Fly is probably in my top 20 horror films of all time). This remake was better than the original, IMO, it had some good body horror, which I love, although it didn’t push it as far as I thought it would. Ultimately, it was good, but I felt like it could have been better.

Haunt (2019) – GREAT horror film. Highly recommend. ‘Nuff said.

The Devil Inside – I never saw this when it first came out. Certainly decent, for this genre. Not one of the scariest or best – no where near the level of Paranormal Activity or Grave Encounters (both I highly recommend, especially the latter).

Some films I’d recommend to skip, that I saw recently, save perhaps one or two good scenes:
The Houses October Built
Little Deaths
Prom Night [I never saw this “classic” until recently. Not great]
The Super [has a few decent moments, but ultimately the story wasn’t as strong as it could have been. It does have an aging Val Kilmer!]

I saw “Beneath” by Larry Fessenden two nights ago. I guess it was as good as most Fessenden films. I loved that the giant carnivorous fish was a practical effect, and did lots of fun things. I also loved that there was zero explanation or backstory for why there is a giant fish in Black Lake.

Cameo by Tio Hector from Breaking Bad.
