Hello. I love the new gods, and – though it’ll be a long while before I can play with them – I’ve been musing over whether it would be possible to play a game where players were free to choose any one additional god for their empire (either War, Magic or Secret). I don’t think this was playtested, and I wonder if you envision any balance issues (for example, competing for Sky Dome areas is important for the summoning of several Magic Gods – would they be too easy if other empires opted for War or Secret Gods?).

I’m planning to play the first time with my friends perhaps just with Humakt (so awesome figure to just stand pointing the direction of play) or with the Elder Races. Then I will add the extra Gods, all of them. And finally the Monsters. I don’t know if it’s just too fast or we need a smoother approach to the game. We will probably play with 5-6 human beings around the table.
I would suggest that for your first game of The Gods War, you might want to just use the factions by themselves (you don’t have to use just the core factions – those from the Empire box are good too). Then you’ll understand how the game flows, and then in your NEXT game you can add the Elder Races, then Gods, then Monsters.

Expect to miss some crucial rule or ability while playing. 
If you really want to add something in your first game, maybe try one of the Dragons. In my experience they have been pretty low impact (and maybe could use a buff?)

Thanks for your suggestions! My playing group tend in all games we play to have an urge to use all rules from the very beginning … and to misread them all!! 
Fortunately I think the rules, the gifts and the empire’s sheet are all well written, and are easy to comprehend. Can’t wait to play this game!!

We’re the same – but it’s good to be restrained with a game like this. The interaction of the base four Empires tells a great story on its own…
