I’ve been playing legacy games lately and I can’t get the idea of a legacy edition of Cthulhu Wars out of my head. It could be a box expansion consisting of rules, cards, a board, and minis. Imagine if the corruption The King in Yellow affected future games. Great Cthulhu messing with the seas. Etc, etc. You could also change the win condition and use doom points as a form of dark magic currancy.
It’s certainly an interesting idea, but Cthulhu Wars is such a simple game IMO that I don’t know what you could make legacy without drastically overhauling the design of the game. If you had more specific examples I’d love to hear them. How exactly would Yellow Sign disfigure the map? What would you spend the new Doom Points on?
I’m just an idea’s guy. You could have a board that is modified during the campaign, giving bonuses/penalties in the game. For example, blasted zones to make movement harder and tunnels to make movement easier. You could use Doom Points for independent monsters and GOO’s as the campaign rolls out. You could created campaign scenarios that promote co-op play and/or PvP.
I wouldn’t sell yourself short. Cthulhu Wars is extraordinarily easy to homebrew. :^)
I would say keeping neutral units between games is a bit too over powered, given how some let you outright win the game. (Dire Azathoth springs to mind.) The idea of adding features to a map is one that could be greatly expanded upon in interesting ways.
I will only say that I myself have only played a very few Legacy games. I did enjoy them. Some team members have encouraged me to do a legacy type game but don’t feel I have enough experience with the genre. I would be excited to see what others might accomplish though.
