What Is Battle Dice?
Battle Dice is a set of 16 custom dice with troll skull designs, sold by Petersen Games for $14.99. The troll-skull set was made for Glorantha: The Gods War, Petersen Games' epic Glorantha wargame, where the troll motif fits the setting, but the dice also work for Cthulhu Wars. It's an add-on that brings new strategic options and premium components to your table. If you're building out your Petersen Games collection and want dice that actually look the part, this is a straightforward pickup at a low entry price.
Petersen Games built its reputation on premium production (the same studio behind Cthulhu Wars and Hyperspace), and even at this price point the component standard stays high.
What Do You Get in the Box?
Sixteen custom dice. That's the core of it.
Each die in the Battle Dice set has a troll skull design. That's not decoration for its own sake. It's the kind of tactile, thematic detail that makes a difference when you've got dice rolling across the table for the third hour of a session. Petersen Games describes the set as adding "new strategic options and high-quality components," which tells you these aren't just cosmetic swaps.
Sixteen dice is a real number. That's enough to supply the dice pool for a game of The Gods War, and enough to bring the same troll-skull look to your Cthulhu Wars sessions.
Is Battle Dice a Standalone Game or an Expansion?
An expansion. The Petersen Games product listing describes Battle Dice as a set that brings new strategic options to your gaming sessions. It's designed to add to something you're already playing, not replace it. If you're looking for a complete game with rules, player boards, and a win condition, check the full Petersen catalog at petersengames.com.
What this set does well is give you 16 premium troll skull dice at a price that doesn't require much deliberation. For collectors who track every component and enthusiasts who want their dice to match the tone of their collection, $14.99 is an easy call.
How Does the $14.99 Price Compare to Petersen's Bigger Games?
Petersen's centerpiece games sit in the $97 to $249 range: Cthulhu Wars (O4 Edition) at $249, Hyperspace Standard Edition at $96.99. Battle Dice is priced as an add-on, not a headline purchase. That's right for what it is.
The troll skull dice are exactly the kind of thing a serious Petersen Games collector picks up alongside a core game. They're expansion territory, a way to deepen a collection you're already invested in, with the same component quality you'd expect from the brand.
For context on Petersen Games' production standard, BoardGameGeek's Cthulhu Wars listing is a good reference point. The reviews there go deep on component quality, which holds across the Petersen lineup. And if you want to understand how custom dice fit into tabletop design more broadly, Tabletop Gaming covers the space regularly.
Should You Buy the Petersen Games Battle Dice Set?
If you're already in the Petersen ecosystem, yes. The price is low, the component count is solid, and 16 custom troll skull dice are the kind of thing that earns a permanent spot in the gaming cabinet. If you're new to Petersen Games and hunting for an entry point, you might want to start with a core game first and add the dice later.
Either way, this is a $14.99 decision with clear upside for anyone already collecting Petersen titles.
