For my first post, I thought I would share the adventure hooks I created for our campaign. I built upon the PC’s Class, Personality Traits, Ideals, Bonds, and Flaws to create a backstory for each player character. What are your thoughts? Did I give too much away? The players began the campaign in the tavern near the docks in Resante eventually interviewing with Captain Censa with her First Mate standing behind her after over hearing her make arrangements to transport the wiklamite to Farzeen.

Female Wood Elf Ranger:
For most of your young adult life you’ve had visions that have left you feeling uneasy. Until recently, your visions made little sense. This changed after the passing of the last silver moon when details from your visions became more clear. You saw a small star shaped island with a large volcano protruding from the center of the island. Then you were reminded of a symbol that was often repeated in your dreams from your youth, a profile of low mountains with a tall central peak on a field of brown. In your latest vision, there were also hundreds of intricate statues that appeared far too real to be made of stone. You set out to find this volcanic island off the southern coast finally arriving at a small coastal town of Resante in search of a star shaped island volcano.

Male Wood Elf Cleric:
Cleric Idle, or Brother Maynard as most call him, is a faithful servant of Lathander, god of birth and renewal. Brother Maynard has served most of his life as a priest in many temples of Lathander. He has devoted to serve in temples in different towns and cities for 15 years at a time. In between each temple service he spends 15 years as a roaming hermit/priest serving on the road and where needed.

One day you received a package from an old family friend, Greyra Amakiir. You learned he had recently passed leaving you a small chest. Mostly there were family trinkets and heirlooms but there was a small golden statue of a woman that caught your eye. You reached for the trinket for a closer look and upon touching it you immediately fell into a deep slumber. When you awoke from your trance you had a horrible feeling of suffering, of death, of the world coming to an end. You recalled a vision of a glowing woman crying, with tears of fiery red. You can tell she needed your help, but then you realized her tears were not for herself. You quickly took the trinket to the head of your order and shared your vision with the high priestess.

She spent several days researching several ancient scrolls and found a story about an older god that tamed an ancient volcano. She is a Goddess of Light and Protector of islanders and people who travel the sea, a distant relative Lathander. Since no one else has had visions but you, the high priestess suggests you should go investigate. This seemed like an omen since you were just about to begin your 7th cycle of roaming. You consult cartographers who suggest you should travel to the southern town of Resante with the hope of finding a ship heading to Farzeen.

Female Dwarf Paladin:
Your jeweler’s guild was attacked by bandits, destroying much of your guild. Many guild brothers and sisters were killed. The target of their raid was a rare green stone called wiklamite. A stone that can be used as a conduit for Eldritch energy. Retrieving the stones is important, but learning ultimately who was responsible for the evil deed and ending their devious plans has now become your primary mission. The chase began immediately. You tracked the thieves for several weeks following one trade deal after another. Along the way you learned several other mines and stone mason shops were also raided for these stones. Eventually your clues take you to the coastal town of Resante where you check into a local inn near the harbor.

Male Human Rogue:
You were on a mission surveying a cult that you expected had more sinister plans than they let on. Of course you were right. Those volcano loving clowns spoke of thieving parties looking for some precious stone they needed to make idols. But if something could go wrong, something will . . . well you know the drill. You reached out to a trustworthy contact on the outskirts of a small coastal town called Resante. You asked for a ride anywhere far, far from here. Your contact suggested you should go to a local tavern near the docks and look into joining the crew of a ship, perhaps the Hazel Folly, a ship setting sail in the morning.

Female Gnome Druid:
You’ve explored a variety of places from forests and plains to distant mountains, but you’ve never seen a volcano, especially one in the middle of a jungle. Not sure why this idea popped in your head, but hey why not. You decide to travel to a small island off the southern coastal town of Resante. Travelling takes you several weeks when you finally reach your destination. You head to the harbor looking for a ship where you run into the harbor master, and old man with large bulbous eyes and a wide thin lipped mouth. He points you towards a nearby inn. You walk away thinking how odd his appearance was, you realize that the harbormaster looks similar to many of the folks you have seen in this town. You hope you can find a ship soon, this town is giving you the creeps. Besides your ready for an adventure. The ocean has got to be better than this dung heap of a town, and besides you’re really excited to meet new exotic animal friends.

These are terrific. I hope you have enjoyed Ghoul Island so far. It was really fun to plot out, and I think my developers did a fabulous job of fleshing it out. I particularly found the Deep Apes to be a hilairious, but logical, development.

Took me a while before I realised the pun in the name of the Ghoul bad guy… Not sure if there are any others like that.

Bwa-ha-ha!!!!!!

Actually – nope. I’m from the UK.

You may know me from other forums and Discord as d(sqrt(-1)), but I couldn’t have that as a name here…

Huh. Would have bet money on Hemulens being known only to Finland, Japan, and a few aberrant fans like myself. I first read Tove Jannsen in 1978, and loved it.

I guess they are not that well known – I read them in the 60s/70s and there was a TV series shown on ITV (although I thought I remembered an earlier one).
