The Mandrake is missing as well, Sandy! It’s my favorite 4th Circle Demon – and almost my favorite figure in the whole game.

Man I suck. The Mandrake is of course making imitation humans, which is why its ability is that ambushes fire at you – the troopers are confused and bemused by who is who. No doubt some of the imitations look like a soldier’s mom, or the guy standing next to him. No wonder they fire at you. The hero’s are able to keep track better. But I really like this monster too because his ability is so interesting, and if you can kill him he actually may help you in future fights, thanks to the mandrake troopers he left behind.

PHILTER – I kind of wish I had a better name, but it’s the “healer” of the monsters so there you are. Originally it doubled the other demon’s defense, so a Gryllys would be be 3+3 instead of 3. But that was too terrible and made it by far the worst demon in the game. It’s still pretty bad, but not quite as extreme.  And yes it’s supposed to be a giant ultimate evolution of the Gryllus.

Considering this, I think I’d of called it a Grysgrys. The effect has less to do with a potion (what I presume the name was derived from) and more to do with a sort of charm or ward, such as a gris-gris. Neat info dump.

Almost all the PA figures have some kind of backstory. This post is to let you guys know some of them!

So there are some images so you can see what I’m talking about.

BELLATRIX – I told Keith that the Bellatrix was a female demon, who might use beauty to distract male heroes. He gave it the most beautiful body of all time – the Venus de Milo. I think this was brilliant, because the way it’s created, obviously this bizarre form would distract ANY hero. It is my theory that this is, in fact, the actual Venus de Milo, stolen from the Louvre and given unnatural life, plus destroying a great work of art forever.

CATOBLEPAS – it’s supposed to look like an instrument of torture, literally falling apart as it tries to pull itself painfully along. I love the fact that it is visually the polar opposite of the Hellhound. It’s hard to get an idea of what’s going on with the Catoblepas at all, which makes it disturbing.

CENDIARY – I took straight from the mythical Kasha demon of Japan. The appearance is based off the version of the Kasha that appears in the Culdcept game.

ELEMENTAL – this is the elemental known to psychic mediums and occultists. Not the D&D entity. It is an invisible thing of evil, wholly given up to the senses, which is why it has the giant kissy lips and no brain. Its ability is supposed to represent it making the other demons semi-invisible, so they’re harder to target.

GADARENE – the look is the unnatural form of an animal walking on its front legs. If you’ve seen a dog or pig do this, you know the back legs dangle uselessly and kind of in a creepy way. So this monster, trying to emulate mankind in a bipedal gate, instead is just the liveliest awfulness.

HELLHOUND – the first monster we ever did, before even the fiends and larvae. I love hellhounds and almost no game ever has had a version hellhounds that impressed me. Till now I guess.

HORTATOR – oarsmen on Roman galleys rowed to the beat of the Hortator’s drums. The Hortator’s facial expression is modeled on the appearance of a rodent that is being squeezed to death, with the popping eyes and gasping mouth. The drum is alive – it is probably the original face of the person who was possessed and transformed by the Hortator.

NUCKELAVEE – has always been my favorite Scottish goblin. I think my favorite part about this one is how instead of a functioning torso, it has a parasitic twin, based on these awful teratological events.

RAPAREE – I wanted an arachnid (non-spider though) built out of human body parts. MAN did Keith deliver. Love it.

SECUTOR – I’ve always been interested in Roman gladiators, like I suppose almost everyone else in the world. Anyway this is my tribute to the Gladiator.

TARDIGRADE – of course. When I was a kid I loved to peer through my microscope for hours. It was a really good model, inherited from my M. D. grandpa. I don’t remember ever spotting a tardigrade, but I saw plenty of gastrotriches.

What about The Madgadele? I’m a bit scared to ask.

did I leave her out? Dang it.

MAGDALENE: her face is supposed to look like the face of a person who has died from edema! Also why she’s puff everywhere. I know she is everyone’s most dire nightmare. Probably the toughest to look at of all the demons. Turns out a fat lady is scarier than outright horned demons, dragons, or scorpions.

VERY TRUE. The Magalene is the scariest of the demons in PA.

Followed by Cthulhu, but just because someone could conceivable bludgeon another to death with it.
