In my last game I was playing Azota and I was going to destroy one of the Automata’s colony but after destruction of the colony my oponent using Digital Backup victory immediately has paid 1 atomic to cancel destruction of the colony and placed it in his storage. So during the whole game I couldn’t kill a single colony of the Automata and I was stucked on my Extinction track and my game was totaly destoyed. Azota takes destoried colonies and places them on Extinction track but Automata places destoryed colonies in it’s storage by paying 1 atoma. Which action does take place first? If you can’t destory Automa colonies then there is no reason to play Azota.

The way Digital Back-Up is worded, it seems like it cancels Extinction.

If you are haivng trouble with Azota, keep in mind you shouldn’t play them in 2 or 3 player games, so if you can go after another Civ than the Azota. Second, Automata needs to spend Atomics to use Digital Back-Ups, so attack them when they don’t have Atomics. If you’re having trouble finding important moment, then try teaming up with another Civ to drain the Automata’s resources. Third, if you really need to fill your Extinction Track you could always Deadworld your Homeworld colonies away.

Thank you for your response. But I think all three comments are not correct.

First – The reason to avoid playing Azota with 2 or 3 player is to prevent harming other player too much by killing their colony. It is not because Azota is very difficult to play.

Second – Even if Automata doesn’t have Atomics to pay for Digital Back-Up there are always Organic or Hyper tokens available to pay instead of Atomics so it is almost impossible to have situation when Automata doesn’t have Atomics, Organics and Hyper at the same time.

Third – I don’t think that I can use DEADWORLD action to fill Extinction Track because I have to destroy rival colony to do that not my own.

Azota – DEADWORLD (Key action) Remove your colony from your homeworld. I think you don’t destroy it but “removing” it permanently from the game so colony doesn’t go to your EXTRINCTION track.

EXTINCTION – When you destroy a rival’s colony (in battle or via tech or secret) place it on the lowest-numbered empty slot on your Extinction Track.

I am still not sure who has to take destroyed colony when Azota destroys Automata’s colony. There are 3 phases in combat “Pre-Battle, Battle and Post-Battle”. We definitely know that Autamata takes colony back during “Post-Battle” but all units are destroyed during second “Battle” phase and as we can see from above stated EXTINCTION Azota takes colony when it is destroyed during battle. Does “in Battle” means in second Battle phase or this word related to whole Battle?

I think we still can take away Automata colonies by playing Tech or Secret cards because there is no Post-Battle phase in this case and Automata can’t take back it’s colony.

1. That doesn’t invalidate my first point. You should always play the Azota with at least 3 rival Civs, so you’ll always have at least 2 other Civs to attack besides Automata.

2. That’s true. However, teaming up with other Civs is still viable to prevent the Automata from using Digital Backups all the time. I highly doubt that Sandy would make a power that is impossible to work around. Besides, I didn’t mention that fact that you could try to bribe Automata to not use Digital Backups. It’s not super viable, I admit, but it’s possible.

3. You can. Explicitly you can. The Deadworld power reads: “Remove one of your colonies from your homeworld and place a Deadworld marker to indicate that no unit can be built on that continent again (even via Rebirth). Then gain the rewards listed on your Extinction track. You may not research Cybernetics, discard it and draw a new tech.”

4. I would agree with that assessment, but mostly because Digital Backups is Post-Battle, which means it only used in Combat.

Here’s my complete read on the situation: If the Azota battle the Automata, they destroy an Automata colony, and the Automata pays 1 Atomic (or Organic, or spends a Hyper, etc…), the Automata gets their colony in their Storage and the Azota get nothing. If there is any deviations from that (the Automata don’t spend the Atomic, the colony is destroyed outside of battle, or otherwise.) then the Azota gets the Colony on their Extinction track.
